Creating a Holiday Scene with the new Snowy Village Stencil: Yippee for Yana
Hi friends! Please join me in welcoming back the oh-so-talented and amazing Yana Smakula! (Please note: our dear friend Yana is Ukrainian. To show support to our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, please see Yana’s post HERE.)
Hello, crafters, this is Yana Smakula for Simon Says Stamp! Welcome back for another Yippee For Yana video! I’m creating a holiday card with the new Snowy Village stencils for this episode.
The Snowy Village is a set of 5 mini stencils, these measure 2 ½” x 3 ⅕” and create a darling village scene with 3 houses, some trees, and snow. I paired these stencils with a mini stamp set, the European Street Add-on set. This set includes tiny images you can add to the houses to liven up the scene. It coordinates with the European Street stamp set but works with these stencils, too. I also used the Holiday Messages stamp set to create the sentiment for my card.
I started working on my card by ink-blending the stencil scene. My color combo for this card is simple and traditional for Christmas – red, green, white, and a touch of brown. I used Cranberry ink for the house in the middle and Melon ink for the other 2 houses. Next, I added the layer with the doors and roofs. For this, I used Cranberry color over the pale yellow houses, and Mocha for the red house.
When you ink blend these images, you need to keep in mind that you are layering ink on top of another ink. Meaning, that if you ink blended the houses blue, you can’t have a yellow door, as if you ink blend the door with yellow ink, it will turn green. So plan ahead the colors you want to use to make sure they layer well.
Next, I added the layer with the windows. Again, this goes over previously applied ink, so for example, I cannot have yellow window light over the brown house unless I use yellow opaque paste that would cover up the brown ink.
I used Citrine ink for the yellow window light over the pale yellow houses and Mocha ink for the dark window outline on the red house.
The next layer is one with the trees and this one is simple. I used Pearfection ink and did directional ink blending from the bottom, fading the ink as it got to the top of the trees.
And the last layer in this stencil set is one to add snow in front of the houses and snowflakes above in the sky. I used Sea Glass ink. This looks like a darling little scene, but if you ask me – it is too simple, it needs detail. The European Streets stamp set comes in handy here as it lets you stamp interesting details to complete this scene.
I used black VersaFine Clair ink and stamped a few images – pennants spanning across 2 houses, a fence, a street light, and a bare tree next to the fur trees.
Isn’t that cute? Love how this looks!
I worked on the sentiment next. I first stamped “May Your Christmas Be” in black ink. Next, stamped Merry in the same Cranberry ink. And finished my sentiment by stamping “and bright” also in black ink.
I trimmed this panel down as I wanted to mount it onto a Sea Glass card base and next, I used a white gelly roll pen and added white door knob details to the doors and white dots over the trees to mimic snow.
Lastly, I foam-mounted the panel onto the card base and added a bit of the red and white twine – it’s been awhile since I used twine last, so I was excited to incorporate it into my project!
Have fun crafting!
