Mixed Media with Shari Carroll: Be Yourself
I’ve had this one on my mind. I’ll be turning 65 next month, which is quite a big birthday! To celebrate, I wanted to create something personal as a reminder to just be myself!
I played around with layers for the background until I had it just right, then used some Tim Holtz stamps with Simon Says Stamp coordinating dies for my arrangement.

Hello! I’ve got a colorful card to share using ink-smooshing! It’s been a while and I had a lot of fun creating this celestial-themed background! My card uses products from the May 2024 Card Kit. The Celestial Wishes set has lots of whimsy images for a many designs!
I used Distress Watercolor Cardstock and embossed the sun rays at the center of my panel and stars all around the sun rays. This will resist the ink-smooshing that I do next. If you haven’t ink-smooshed before, I encourage you to try it! Watch the video for this project and see how easy it is!

I gathered the ink colors I wanted to use (Peony, Terracotta, Zest, Ocean, Morning, Cadette, Iris) and worked with one color at a time. I tapped some color onto my glass board and spritzed it with some water to water it down. Then using a piece of cellophane from stamp/die packaging, I picked up the ink and transferred it to my embossed panel. Between layers if it was too wet, I dried it with my heat tool. Once I was happy with one color, I would move onto the next until I got through the rainbow of colors I chose.
Using a Circle Mask, I ink-blended the purple ink all around the mask to create the shape of a moon over the embossed rays. I added a bigger ink-blended area at the bottom of the mask than the top.
I stamped the Celestial Wishes images using the inks I used on my background. To add dimension and multiple colors to the images, I used the Tim Holtz Tiny Blending Tools and Sponge Applicators to apply the ink. These tools are super handy and are a part of the May 2024 Card Kit! After die-cutting with the Celestial Wishes Dies, I attached them with 3D foam squares to give them dimension. I finished by attaching an embossed sentiment.
